RIOJA WINE REGION

Rioja Alavesa region is proud to be home to world-famous red wines and stunning iconic wineries.

Winemaking was first introduced in Rioja by Romans and Phoenicians in ancient times and the first recorded reference the vineyards dates back to the 9th century. As if that were not enough, numerous old stone wine presses excavated from the rock have been found in the region. The visit to the wineries will allow you to appreciate and enjoy this tradition passed down from father to son for generations.

We will head first for Laguardia, a lovely fortified town rich with history and wine culture, located near the Camino de Santiago. Perched upon a hill and riddled with cellars, the place has kept its medieval architecture and monuments intact. On our way to our next destination, we will also have the opportunity to admire one of the several dolmens that can be seen in the area.

Once arrived in Labastida, we will explore its narrow streets lined with old noble houses bearing family coats of arms. Then we will go wine tasting in a traditional family run wine cellar, where its owner will take us on a private tour through the underground maze of barrel caves dating from the 13th century. A light lunch featuring local products will be served on the premises in the company of the winemaker, who will answer all your questions.

Of course, we will not miss an amazing visit and wine tasting at one of the most avant-garde wineries in Rioja. Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, or Santiago Calatrava have left their mark on the landscape in the form of breathtaking buildings among the vineyards.
